Vernon uses big plays to defeat Bulldogs

Last week the Altus High Bulldogs gave up several big plays in their scrimmage against Frederick and Weatherford.

Unfortunately, that problem continued in their season opener with the Vernon Lions here on Friday night. The result was a35-14 loss to the talented Lions.

It was a big play offense that was a thorn in the side of the Bulldogs and the main culprit was Orlando Hayman. The 6-0, 205 pound senior reeled off274 yards on11 carries and scored three touchdowns. He also had a 92 yard run that set up another score.

The first score came on the fifth play when Haymon broke loose on a trap play for a 38 yard touchdown run.

Altus came right back on its second snap of the night. Junior quarterback Tanner Cross went right on the option, a play that caught the Vernon defense out of position. Cross cut up field and when it was over he recorded a 55-yard run for the TD. The kick failed and the score was 6-6 with 8:41 remaining in the first period.

But Vernon broke the game open by scoring the next three times they had their hands on the ball.

Quarterback David Garza took it to the right on a bootleg and rambled 44 yards for a score. Haymon followed that with another 38 yard jaunt for a TD.

Haymon, on a another trap play which started from the Lions seven yard line scampered 92 yards before Altus’ Malcolm Lewis tackled him at the one yard line. However, Danny Valverde ran it in in on the next play and Vernon led 28-6 with 9:44 left in the first half.

The second half was a different story. On its first possession Vernon went on a methodical

11 play 64 yard drive that took more than seven minutes off the clock. Hayman finished the march with a 2 yard TD run. Vernon led 35-6 with 11:11 left in the game.

The Bulldogs responded well. A 44 yard run by Taven Birdow sparked Altus to a 79 yard drive for a score. T.J. McGill finished it with a one yard run for the score. Birdow added the conversion points and Altus trailed 35-14 with 9:06 left in the game.

Statistically it was a good offensive night for the Bulldogs. They rushed for 334 yards, added 55 through the air for 393 yards in total offense.

But four other times Altus penetrated inside Vernon territory, once inside the five yard line. Two of those drives stalled and two others ended by fumble.

“You would expect if you had three hundred and thirty something yards rushing you would be in the end zone more than twice,” Stone said. “We’re having a hard time,” Stone said. “Half of the formations called, there seems to be a lot of undo confusion out there. There’s never any confusion during practice.”

Stone said before the game they needed to control Garza and Haymon on the trap play.

“I don’t know how many yards he (Haymon) ended up with but it was a lot and a lot of it was on the trap,” Stone said. “We worked it (the trap) hard all week long, with our interior linebackers making sure they hit their flow key up right and the outside linebacker filling correctly. Making sure our defensive tackles spillled and make it come to the outside. You saw several times it hit right up the gut because we ran straight up field. We have good kids, talented kids, I don’t know they lose focus sometimes. They get out there and just forget and run up field and do silly things. That happened from the get go.”

Stone told the players after the game they are a better team than what had showed.

“I told they they were better than that,” Stone said. ” I told them that they are better than last year’s team from this stand point. After halftime when Vernon got up 28-6, we shut it down. These kids continue to to fight, force turnovers and drive and try to get into the end zone. We just have to finish.”
