There will be many animal-related events and activities at this year’s Jackson County Fair, coming up this week, Wednesday, Sept. 4 through Saturday, Sept. 7. There will be a Pet Show, for any type of pet, Weiner Dog Races, Turtle Races, Petting Zoo, Border Collie Demonstrations, and of course, the Livestock Show.
The Pet Show is open to youth and adults. This show is scheduled for Saturday at 12 Noon, and is always a lot of fun with lots of interesting entries. The pets should be on a leash or in a cage. Ribbons will be awarded in 9 classes: Class 1: Small Dogs-1-25 lbs.; Class 2: Medium Dogs-26-50 lbs; Class 3: Large Dogs- 51-100 lbs; Class 4: Cats and Kittens; Class 5: Exotic Pets (Frogs, Birds, Turtles, Lizards, Fish, etc.); Class 6: Large Animal Pets (Horses, Sheep, Pigs, Goats, etc.); Class 7: Owner and Pet look-alike contest; Class 8: Best Dressed Pet; Class 9: Silliest Pet Trick. Grand and Reserve Pet will be chosen from Classes 1-6.
The Weiner Dog Races will be held on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Two people required for each wiener dog entered, one at the starting line and one at the finish line. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times when not racing or preparing to race. No food will be permitted in the racing area. Humans may use bells, whistles, toys etc. to coax dogs to finish line. Proof of current vaccinations are required (Rabies, Parvo & Distemper), ther should be no sign of communicable disease, no female dogs in season, and all entries to be disqualified are at the discretion of the volunteer veterinarian. Rules are subject to change.
The ever popular turtle races are scheduled for Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. These races are always a blast with young people entering their speediest box turtles.
The Livestock Shows will happen Thursday through Saturday. Species being shown include chickens, rabbits, cavies, sheep, swine, goats, and cattle. Their will also be a petting zoo available during these days and of course, the famous Kevin Law Border Collie demonstration will be present on Friday and Saturday.
As you can see there are several animal activities during the county fair. Just make sure to check the schedule and come on out and enjoy the fun.
