Spencer Riley and Dusty Dollins brought home the Top Food Showdown Team award from State 4-H Roundup this year. The Food Showdown competition allows teams 40 minutes to prepare either a main dish, fruits and vegetables, or snack dishes. They are provided with a pantry at the competition and then given secret ingredients just prior to their 40 minute time period starting. They have to calculate the meal and serving cost of their ingredients plus present a discussion related to health and kitchen safety around the preparation of their dish. They must also prepare their dish to serve to the judges and clean their kitchen area, again all within the 40 minute time period.
As the winning team Spencer and Dusty have won the right to represent Oklahoma in a National Food Showdown competition in New Orleans, in August 2014. Dusty and Spencer, along with other competitors from this year’s state contest, have also been invited to prepare a March of Dimes fund raiser meal with top eight Oklahoma City Chefs in November of this year.
“These two young individuals have done a fantastic job with this program and certainly deserved to win the competition with the initiative and work they put into preparing for both the district and state competitions”, Gary Strickland, Jackson County Extension Educator, said. They also recognize all of the help they had from adults in the community in preparing them for this activity. Special recognition goes out to Dani Jensen, Tom Null, and Lynn Null (former Jackson County Extension Educator) for meeting and coaching Spencer and Dusty for their competitions. Kim Davis, SW District 4H Program Specialist, also met with the dynamic duo in helping them prepare.
