Altus man involved in injury collision

An Altus man was involved in an injury accident in Kiowa County on Wednesday.

According to reports from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident happened on SH54 south of Ozark Trail in Kiowa County at about 10:27 a.m. when a vehicle slowed to make a left turn.

The report states that John Swihart Jr. , 78, of Ft. Worth, Texas, driving a 2005 Ford F250 pickup, had slowed to make a left turn when Alberto Gonzalez, 43, of Altus, driving a 1999 Kenworth, began to overtake the Swihart vehicle, causing both vehicles to collide.

Swihart was taken by Carnegie EMS to Elkview General Hospital in Hobart where he was admitted in stable condition with head injuries. Gonzales was not injured.

There were no passengers in the vehicles.

According to the report, Swihart failed to signal, and Gonzales was said to have improperly overtook at an intersection.

Seatbelts were equipped and in use by both vehicles, but did not deploy.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Anthony Linares and assisted by Trooper George Hoyle, the Kiowa County Sheriff’s Department and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
