OHCE scholarship applications available

Jackson County Oklahoma Home and Community Education is taking applicants for one $500 scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded for use for tuition, fees or books at Western Oklahoma State College or Southwest Technology Center.


OHCE is a non-profit organization to improve the quality of living for Oklahomans. The organization has a continuing education program in all aspects of home and community life. Its aim is better living and the development of a well-informed people quipped to handle changing problems and situations in the home and community.


The OHCE has offered scholarships for many years to the deserving individuals of Jackson County. This years’ applicants must be a Jackson County Resident planning to attend WOSC or SWTC the summer, fall or spring. One scholarship will be awarded to a current junior/senior high school student or an adult student currently enrolled. This scholarship is meant to assist a high school student in taking that first step in continuing their education. This scholarship is also offered to encourage adults to pursue higher education. Funds for the scholarship come from the sale of Jackson County multi colored afghans which depict points of interest from around the county. The afghans can be purchased for $45 at Petal Pushers, 821 N. Main, Altus.


Scholarship applications can be picked up at the OSU Cooperative Extension Service or by email at april.sirmons@okstate.edu. The office is located on the NW corner of the WOSC campus at 2801 N. Main St. Suite A in Altus. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday, or call (580)482-0823. Please refer to the application for deadlines.


The applications will be judged by a panel of OHCE members based on academics, educational plans, financial need, personal activities and experiences. Scholarship applications are offered to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, or status as a veteran.
