April 6-12 proclaimed National Tartan Week

April 3, 2014

The week of April 6 -12 has been proclaimed as Tartan Week in Altus. City of Altus Mayor David Webb signed the proclamation, with Scottish American residents of Altus, to ask citizens to join in celebration with the organization regardless of his or her own cultural and national heritage.

In 2005, the United States Congress designated April 6, as National Tartan Day, and in 2008, President George W. Bush issued a Presidential Proclamation affirming April 6, as National Tartan Day “to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States.

Scots-Americans are proud of their heritage, culture, and the influences and achievements of Scots-Americans in shaping of American democracy, society, and history. It is fitting and proper to officially recognize the ethnic celebrations which will commemorate the occasion.

With the help of several national Scottish American and Tartan groups, an organization is being formed of fellow Scots living in Altus with the objective to promote Scottish heritage and culture, to publicize Scots-American’s contributions to American Society, and perform community service.
