Coupling failure on trailer causes pickup to overturn

May 7, 2014

Thomas E. Phillips, 53, of Altus, was driving a 2003 Ford pickup and pulling a 20-foot flatbed trailer Tuesday when lost control of the vehicle.

According to reports from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Phillips was traveling east on US Hwy 62 in Tillman County when the coupling device failed, causing the trailer to start swaying. This in turn caused Phillips to lose control. The vehicle ran off the right side of the road, overturned 3/4 times, and came to rest on the drivers side.

Phillips was taken by Kiowa County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus where he was admitted in good condition with a shoulder injury.

There were no passengers in the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved. Seatbelts were equipped and in use, and airbags were equipped but did not deploy.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Scott Hazle, and was assisted by Capt. Johnny Freeman, Lt. Steve Pothorst, Kiowa County Sheriff’s Department, Snyder Police Department, Snyder Fire Department and Kiowa County EMS.
