Near drowning turns fatal for Altus girl

An eight-year-old Altus girl has passed away after a near drowning on Monday, June 16.

According to reports, the girl was taken by Greer County EMS to Quart View Medical Center, then taken by Medi-Flight to the children’s hospital in Oklahoma City. The incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. The girl was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, but passed away at 6:42 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17.

The girl and her grandfather had been wading in the Horsehead Cove area at Quartz Mountain when the girl stepped off into deep water and was submerged. The was found by her grandfather and retrieved from the water, and CPR was started.

The incident was investigated by George Hoyle of the Marine Enforcement Division, and was assisted by Trooper Shawn Laughlin of the Greer County detachment of Troop M and Lt. Stephen Pothorst of Troop M, Greer County Sheriff’s Office and Greer County EMS, Quartz Mountain Park Units, Game Warden Brandon Leahman, Granite Police and Medi-Flight.
