Squeaky Wheel Entertainment has begun a grassroots Internet campaign to draw awareness to its family film “The True Adventures of the Abernathy Boys,” which is based on the book “Bud and Me” (www.budandme.com).
It’s the story of five-year-old Temple Abernathy and his nine-year-old brother Bud who in 1909 carried out a courageous adventure on horseback from Oklahoma to New Mexico — alone. In the next four years the Abernathy boys traveled more than 12,000 miles in a series of amazing and unforgettable expeditions across widespread parts of the United States by horseback, automobile and motorcycle. The book was written by Temple’s wife Alta and their daughter Barbara Harris.
Now, Squeaky Wheel Entertainment is taking the story to film fans around the world and asking them to vote online if they would like to see “True Adventures” made into a movie. The Internet has opened the door to global a “pitch frenzy” in which movie-goers can help influence a studio into making a feature film.
“As evidenced by the films Julie & Julia and Paranormal Activity, the Internet enables people unprecedented access to an audience of millions and helps bring awareness to these projects,” says Michele Linse Jeffers, a producer at Squeaky Wheel Entertainment.
“The True Adventures of the Abernathy Boys is a humorous, adventurous and inspirational family film without fancy visual effects or stemming from an established franchise. All studios want to know that their investments will pay off. Enabling movie fans to have a voice gives them a sense of ownership and confirms that there is an audience for the film,” Jeffers explains.
Bernice Kenton, another Squeaky Wheel Entertainment producer, concurs.
“We fell in love with the characters of this true story, and, as independent producers in Hollywood, we have put together a great team and an exciting script with a modest budget,” she notes. “Now we seek the voice of fans to demand excellent family entertainment for their kids. The movie is filled with family values, brotherly love, and a stranger’s kindness. It will be a breath of fresh air.”
To gain awareness and support for the movie, the Web site for “Bud an Me” (www.budandme.com) has introduced a feature in which fans of the book can cast their online vote for the movie. Look for the popcorn tub and cast your VOTE to help make a great adventure come to life for this generation to enjoy. Our goal is to have as many folks vote by Friday, March 12.
