There were no immediate reports of injuries with the storms on Thursday.
The National Weather Service says the highest wind gusts occurred in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, including a 75-mph wind gusts about 6 miles west of Edmond.
Winds peeled off the roof of an elementary school in northwest Oklahoma, damaging classrooms and the library.
In Altus, high winds hit around 7:30 p.m., with moderate to heavy downpours across the area. Although some parts of the city received more rain than others, Altus Air Force Base reported rainfall at 1.19”.
Putnam City School district spokesman Steve Lindley told KOCO-TV that several employees at James L. Dennis Elementary School, including the principal, were still in the building when the storm hit. Lindley says classes were canceled today. Aerial footage also showed damage to fences, a church's steeple and to the roofs of at least two businesses.
