According to Oklahoma Forestry Services, or OFS, a fire on Flat Top Mountain, southeast of Lake Altus-Lugert and Quartz Mountain Nature Park began burning Sunday from a lightning strike in dense, granite terrain.

As of Wednesday, the fire burned through 650 acres in Kiowa County. Local fire departments responded to the fire with OFS who stayed at the scene overnight Tuesday working to put out the blaze.

According to City of Altus Emergency Manager Lloyd Colston, personnel and trucks from the Blair Volunteer Fire Department and Snyder Volunteer Fire Department have assisted Kiowa County fire departments and OFS.

OFS has sent out two dozers, four type 6 engines for hauling water, and unified command with Lone Wolf, Gotebo and Hobart fire departments, and Kiowa County Emergency Managment.

According to Oklahoma Forestry Services, it’s estimated that around 1,500 acres will be affected by the time the fire can be contained, but no structures are threatened by the fire at this time.
