A Street project to see overlay


Portions closing for paving

In August, the City of Altus Street Department began work on A Street. Part chipped concrete, patchy pavement and dusty rock, the once concrete street has been weathered and worn down over time due to water damage and heavy traffic from Main Street to Park Avenue in front of Altus High School.

What began with chipping out the patched-up potholes and filling them with rock to level them with the existing road, A Street has been a work in progress.

After receiving approval from the Altus City Council at the August 15 meeting, the Street Department was able to contract out for the remaining work to be done—a two-inch asphalt overlay that will smooth out the road and offer commuters an easy drive from Grady Street to Park Avenue.

Beginning Monday, the Street Department, working with Hokett Construction of Blair, will be closing off portions of A Street one three-block section at a time to lay the asphalt. The roads will be closed daily but will be reopened for travel in the evenings.

“Once the overlay is done on a section, that’s it,” Street Commissioner Chad Osborne said. “At that point, the road will be ready for use.”

The overlay schedule for A Street is planned by day.

Monday—the 200 to 500 block

Tuesday—the 500 to 800 block

Wednesday—the 800 to 1000 block

Thursday—1 block of Ash Street

According to Osborne, the Street Department plans to have the pavement overlay on A Street done by the end of the week.

“I know it’s been a hassle for the people living and driving down it,” Osborne said. “But after we’re done it will be a good road for them.”
