Grade Center decision to be finalized in February

The Altus Board of Education held a regular meeting yesterday, Oct. 12. The meeting opened with Superintendent Hill’s reports and comments, including the recognition of Rivers Elementary School for making the Top Ten list of schools in Oklahoma, Jackson County Memorial Hospital for donation of knee and ankle braces, and First National Bank for donation of the football locker room renovation. Recognition was also given to students Chad Jordan as a Commended Student and Logan Mealer as a semi-finalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.

According to the grade centers report given by Roe Worbes, a decision about whether to have grade centers in Altus, and related details would like to be reached at the February Board meeting. There will be more upcoming opportunities for teachers, as well a citizens, to weigh in on the subject and to have questions answered.

During Worbes’ report on the grade centers, he made it clear again that there is a money problem and that is the reason grade centers are being actively considered.

Claims and the consent agenda were approved.

A public hearing to receive general discussion and comments on the financial matters of the Altus School District was opened. The hearing was closed after no questions were raised from the public.

There was no new business to discuss.

Resignations approved were Carrie Crafton, Special Ed Aide a Sunset Elementary, effective Oct. 10, 2015, and Venus Valladarez, custodian at Will Rogers Elementary, effective Jan. 8, 2016.

Substitutes approved were Dewayne Fagan, Mark Gonzales, Charles King, and Natasha Suarez.

Volunteers approved were Hollis Atkinson, JD Falkner, Cleota Lujan, Helen McLeod, Douglas Shimmin, and William St. Clair.

Extra duty personnel approved was Shawn McClellan, Assistant H.S. Wrestling, 3 Sport Incentive.

New support hires approved were Olivia Fixico- ELL Aide for the District, effective Oct. 13; Laura Lopez, Title I Aide at Will Rogers, effective Oct. 6; and Kevin Newton, Security Officer, effective Nov. 2.
