Group organizing event to place wreaths on local military graves

by Michael Bush, -

It may seem a bit early to be thinking about Christmas wreaths, but one local organization is organizing efforts to place wreaths on all of the local military graves this holiday season. The time to start gathering donations is now, because wreaths have to be ordered in advance.

This is the second year for the Altus Air Force Sergeants Association Chapter 988 to head up the local “Wreaths Across America” event.

The Wreaths Across America story began over 15 years ago when Worcester Wreath Company (a for-profit commercial business from Harrington, Maine) began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones of our Nation’s fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery during the holidays.

Over that period of time, Worcester Wreath has donated 90,000 wreaths which were placed by volunteers in a wreath-laying ceremony each December. But as word spread, the mission to Remember; Honor; and Teach about the sacrifices made by our veterans has captured the hearts and minds of many communities across the Country.

The Altus Air Force Sergeants Association has taken it upon themselves to oversee the local placement of approximately 1,300 wreaths on the headstones of those who served and sacrificed for our freedoms.

In order to get this project successfully accomplished, the group is asking for sponsorships to help pay for the wreaths. An individual sponsorship, or one wreath, is $15, and a family donation of $75 will get five wreaths. Business are urged to make donations to purchase 10 to 50 wreaths, however any donation to the cause will be accepted.

If you would like to make a sponsorship donation with a credit card, you can visit and designate the Group ID# as OK0015, and location ID# as OKCOAC. (Wreaths are not sent directly to the individuals purchasing sponsorships). The donation deadline for the Altus project is Nov. 30.

The local Wreaths Across America event will be held Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Altus City Cemetery.
