Ash Wednesday services will begin at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church this coming Wednesday, Feb. 10. Services will be officiated by Chaplain Erin Martinez.
The Worship Committee welcomes members, friends and the community to their Ash Wednesday service that will include scripture, readings, special music, and the imposition of ashes. As an integral part of the service, the imposition of ashes involves drawing a cross on the worshipper’s forehead with ashes. This practice dates back as early as the first century. According to the church, this is an opportunity to collectively draw closer to God and each other.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the six-week period of spiritual discipline before Easter. Lent is most commonly a time associated with fasting, study and prayer, but it is also a time to recount the steps of Jesus to the cross, culminating in the celebration of the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
The First Presbyterian Church is located at 208 East Cypress in Altus.
