April packed with fun, local events

Spring is here and the weather is perfect for attending several of the events coming up today and in the coming weeks. The Keeper of the West exhibit and program at the Museum of the Western Prairie is being held tonight.

The art exhibition, on loan from NBC Oklahoma Bank, includes paintings, sculptures and drawings by renowned Oklahoma artist Harold T. Holden. It will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the museum. It will be on display in the First Gallery of the museum through the end of May. The exhibition was guest curated by Stacey Durham of the Wigwam Gallery.

Local cowboy Joe Buchanan will also be on hand tonight at the museum to respond with comments about the details in the paintings and the authenticity of their presentation.

On Friday, the Jackson County Health Department is conducting an exercise at the Altus Community Center, the FAAST Team Fly In and a Kickball Tournament is scheduled on April 9 at the City Baseball Fields on Katy Drive. The event will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The Kiwanis Sandy Nichols Memorial Golf Tournament will be held next Friday, April 15, Western Oklahoma State College’s spring musical “Into The Woods” is slated for April 15, 16, and 17. The Stephen E. Booker Child Advocacy Center Benefit will also be held April 15 and 16 with a spaghetti dinner at the Altus Community Center. The 5 p.m. dinner will be followed by a 7 p.m. auction.

The Altus Public Library’s annual Book Lover’s Shopping Spree is going to be held Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16, and the Oklahoma Center for Non Profits is hosting a Fundamentals of Grant Writing Workshop at the Altus Chamber of Commerce on April 21.

The next Legislative Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, April 22 at noon at Western Oklahoma State College. This is your opportunity to hear what our local legislators have to say, and for you to voice concerns and ask questions.

New York native singer and actress “Roz Brown and her Rockin’ Band” will be in Altus on Thursday, April 28 for a dynamic, crowd pleasing concert performance at 7 p.m. at the Altus City Auditorium. The event is being sponsored by the Shortgrass Arts and Humanities Council.

Coming up in May, the Jackson County Ministerial Alliance National Day of Prayer Breakfast will be held on May 5, and the Rock N Rumble Car Show and Cruise will be held on May 6 and 7.
