In April, 1941, a group of visionaries from the Altus business community filed Articles of Incorporation with the State of Oklahoma to establish the Altus Chamber of Commerce as an Oklahoma corporation. Before that time, the Chamber had existed as the Altus Civic and Commercial Club since 1908, but the actions of W.O. Goodman, H.W. Cotner, Carroll Spangler, and Hugh Garnett would open a new and exciting chapter in the history of the Altus business community.
Thursday will mark 75 years since the Altus Chamber of Commerce became an official Oklahoma corporation. “The Chamber of Commerce has been dedicated to serving Altus every day since its inception. The vision of those business leaders in 1941 carried out the legacy that was established in 1908 and has grown into an organization that continually focuses on advancing the economic, industrial, professional, cultural, and civic welfare of the Altus area,” explains Brian Bush, President & CEO.
To celebrate this historic milestone, the Chamber of Commerce will host a free hot dog cook out at 5 p.m. at its offices at 301 West Commerce. Chamber members and the public are invited to stop by and enjoy the celebration honoring 75 years since the Chamber incorporated and over 108 total years of service to Altus.
Very special thanks to the Altus Chamber of Commerce members who contributed in honor of the 75th Celebration:
