Fudge, sweet concoctions, coffee, smoothies, and kitchen essentials are elements of a business plan that Doris and Donald Jouett have employed for 40 years. “Confectionately Yours” opened in October 1975 in the downtown Altus Mini-Mall that was located on West Broadway. They featured Wilton-brand cake supplies and a specialty Candy Shoppe. Doris taught cooking classes and baked cakes, most notably wedding cakes, for all occasions.
As their business enjoyed success, their first location became too small to contain their current operation as well as the additions they wanted to make. In 1977, they moved inside the Altus Plaza Mall. They continued their popular cake baking and candy making classes and added a complete kitchen gourmet shop. The line of kitchen gadgets, utensils, and the cake ware that was one of their original successes, helped make “Confectionately Yours” (CY) a local favorite. It was there that they added the catchy sub-title to the business name “Confectionately Yours…Sweets to Gourmet”.
In 1981 they relocated the store to a larger location inside the Altus Plaza Mall. The move tripled their retail space and they began the Loft Cooking School with cake and candy classes and lessons in gourmet techniques. Cooks as young as four years old benefited from their instruction. Doris and Donald instructed classes as well Doris’ mother the late June Branan. They brought in well-known cooking instructors for classes from gum-paste flowers to Chinese wok cookery. Popular cookbook authors were featured and were very well received.
Soon the Jouett’s added cream and butter fudge, freshly made on site, to their line of now very popular products. Their signature fudge “Texas Triple Decadence®” is a registered trademark due to its great popularity. In 1983, still at their mall location, they added a coffee and tea bar with espresso, cappuccinos, and fruit smoothies. They took their Espresso Cart to Altus Air Force Base and other locations in Altus and surrounding communities for special events.
In 2003 they relocated to their current location at Crown Center on Main and Cypress streets, and decreased the amount of their retail space. “Jouett’s Java” offers a variety of coffee and coffee beans, espresso drinks, fruit smoothies and teas.
The CY staff developed their own mixtures of coffee and espresso drinks that resulted from celebrities visiting the shop. In honor of the Miss Altus pageant there is the “Miss Altus Crown Delight” as well as the “Miss Altus Teen Delight.” For the Boston Brass ensemble that has performed in Altus one can order the “Boston Brassacino.” The Australian C-17 Air Crew inspired the “Confectionately Down Under.” The titles on the menu are entertaining to read and the staff is always ready to mix up something new.
“We began and continue,” explains Doris, “to put God first then family then “Confectionately Yours”. Our customers are very important to us and all are very much appreciated.”
“With God as our pilot, we have owned and operated “Confectionately Yours” for four decades. Five generations of our family and great staff members through the years have contributed to our success,” stated Doris. “We are grateful for the support of our steady “faithful customers”. Striving for a friendly atmosphere and to make this a “home away from home”, CY has welcomed families and students who are stationed at Altus Air Force Base. Several flight students from around the world who have trained at AAFB have made deliberate re-visits to Doris and Donald. Colorful squadron patches line the walls in the shop, a conversation piece especially to newcomers.
Friends and customers are encouraged to drop by CY to share their favorite memories and to congratulate Doris, Donald, their family and staff for their 40 successful years in business.
