Longtime Altus residents, Dr. Carl and Betty Reed are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this month. Their plans include spending time with family and friends, following a celebratory trip together through the Pacific Northwest.
The couple first met in the seventh-grade and graduated high school together in 1955 in Carter. The two were married the following summer, June 23, 1956 at the first Baptist Church in Carter. Betty was given in marriage by her brother, Dale Cartmill. Carl’s brother, Jack was his best man while Betty’s best friend, Anita Thompson was her Matron of Honor. The service was conducted by Whitley Garrett. Betty recalls it was a hot, summer day as the ceremony began, with a huge sandstorm blowing so incredibly hard as guests arrived. “You could not see across the street.” Thankfully the skies cleared by the time they said their ‘I do’s’.
After graduating Carver Chiropractic College and working with other doctors around the state, Carl decided to step out on his own. He moved to Altus in 1965 with his young family, opening Reed Chiropractic Clinic at 112 N. Julian, where he remained for the next 50 years.
Betty kept busy early on raising the children. She also worked some of those years as a legal secretary, eventually getting her real estate license and going to work for Buck and Roberson Real Estate in Altus. She eventually opened an office of her own before going to work in the real estate loan department of NBC Bank. In more recent years, starting in 1999, Betty worked in Carl’s chiropractic office in administrative services. She retired for good just this past March.
Carl is a member of the Oklahoma State Chiropractic Association and the American Chiropractic Association, serving two years as a state delegate to the American Chiropractic Association. He still works part time with his son, Paul at the new office location, 1311 N. Main St., Altus.
The couple had six children, David, Brenda, Philip, Tena, Wendy and Paul. They have 13 Grandchildren, Olivia, Benton and Carter Reed of Austin, TX; Connor and Kelly Finney of Alamo, CA; Tinah Reed-Moles and Caleb Reed of Enid; Grayson and Bailey Howard of Frederick and Emily Howard- Schulz of Stillwater; and Fletcher, Preston and Faith Reed of Hobart. The Reeds have one great-grandchild, Camdyn Moles of Enid, with another grandbaby, Maylyn, also of Enid, on the way.
