The beginning of the school year is roughly 30 days away and there is a lot of important information every parent and student will need to know going into the fall semester.
“We are right on schedule to make this a very smooth transition to grade centers,” said Altus Public Schools Superintendent Roger Hill. “We’ve had tremendous cooperation from staff and lots of help to get everyone moved.”
The APS system adopted a grade center format last spring and has closed the doors to Washington Elementary School and Eugene Field Elementary School — or Bulldog Academy in recent years — for the foreseeable future.
This change means children will be attending different schools for different grades and this is something parents need to be aware of before dropping their children off on the first day of school.
“We will be ready for the arrival of students on the first day of school,” said Hill. “Our staff believes that grade centers will best serve our students. It’s very exciting. It’s all about doing what’s best for our students.”
Altus Early Childhood — formerly Will Rogers Elementary School — will house pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students.
Altus Primary School — formerly Roosevelt Elementary School — will house first- and second-graders.
Altus Elementary School — formerly Sunset Elementary School — will house all students in the third and fourth grades.
Bulldog Academy is being moved to Altus High School.
It is also important to note that any students planning on riding the bus this school year will now need to enroll to do so.
Altus Public Schools bus enrollment is taking place 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1-2 at the Altus Intermediate School cafeteria.
Whether the student is in kindergarten or the 12th grade, enrollment is required. All students wishing to ride a bus must live about one and a half miles from the school they will be attending.
For more information on bus enrollment, contact the Altus Public Schools Transportation Department at 580-481-3083.
Athletic physicals and drug testing for the seventh- and 12th-graders will begin 8 a.m. August 6 at the AHS cafeteria.
Freshman orientation for all incoming ninth-graders will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 at the AHS cafeteria.
Additionally, all students enrolling for the first time in Altus Public Schools should stop by the Altus High School cafeteria on the corner of Park Avenue and Cypress Street from 8 a.m. to noon July 29 for the school system’s 0ne-stop enrollment.
All the paperwork necessary to get a child enrolled into school can be completed at the AHS cafeteria without having to make extra trips.
Required documents include a birth certificate, proof of residency, current immunization records and social security numbers for each child.
Children who are entering preschool must be four years old on or before Sept. 1. Children who are entering kindergarten must be five years old on or before Sept. 1.
Meet the Teacher Day will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5 at each Altus school.
