According to reports, officers took cover positions at the scene while awaiting backup, then heard a single gunshot from inside the car. After approaching the vehicle the officers found Wittrock dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

WARRENSBURG — The Warrensburg Police Department have confirmed a a single fatality following reports of an armed individual in the parking lot of Warrensburg High School Friday morning.


According to reports, officers were notified about 7:45 a.m. of a white male with a “long gun” in the parking lot of the high school. By the time officers responded to the scene the suspect had fled the area, but was spotted by officials a short time later.


The suspect was stopped in the parking lot of a car wash near the intersection of Maquire and Clark streets, near the campus of University of Central Missouri.


Officers reportedly took cover positions and awaited backup, then heard a single shotgun blast from inside the car.


After backup arrived, officers approached the car and found Kyle M. Wittrock, 18, a WHS senior, deceased inside the car from a self-inflicted wound to the head, reports state.


The report emphasizes that no shots were fired at the school and all students are safe.


Missouri Highway Patrol and University of Central Missouri Police assisted Warrensburg police officers at the scene.
