Grace Dempsey of Altus, second from right, was honored as a nominee for the 2013 AARP Oklahoma Andrus Award for Community Service at a luncheon held recently in Oklahoma City. A retired teacher who taught home economics and elementary classes for nearly 40 years, Grace personifies the legacy of AARP Founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. She volunteers for the Great Plains Literacy Council where she is tutoring a young, Hispanic mother with her English and has been available as a volunteer tutor for more than eight years. She offers encouragement and support to her students, is very prompt and dependable and even takes her adult students on field trips to explain concepts and English words. Grace is active in the Jackson County Retired Educators, the Thomas Street Church of Christ, the American Legion Auxiliary, AARP Southwestern Oklahoma Chapter, and the Oklahoma Silver Bells. At age 94, she enjoys good health and energy and can even been seen cruising in the “Rock & Rumble” car show in Altus every May.
