A Special Election is being held on Jan. 14, 2014, to elect a new Jackson County Commissioner for District #2, to fill an unexpired 4-year term. The office will be temporarily vacant after current Commissioner Anthony Fixico, who took office in 2013, retires at the end of this year. Following the Special election, a General election is scheduled for March 4, 2014.
After working 32 years for Jackson County, Fixico will retire from his office as of Dec. 31. He has served as County Commissioner for six years, a road foreman for 18 years, and a grader operator eight years.
“I’ve really enjoyed working for the citizens of Jackson County,” Fixico said. “After 32 years it’s time to retire.” Fixico said he plans to go fishing and enjoy spending more time with his grand kids.
The candidate filing period for the position ended last week, and there are five to be considered by voters during the special election, including Robert Tucker - D., Brent Southall - D., Wayne Cain- R., Kirk Butler - R., and Teresa Scott - R.
According to Jennifer Wilson, Jackson County Election Board Secretary, a Primary election and a General election are being held because there was so much interest shown by those running for office. The General election will be between one Republican candidate and one Democratic candidate.
Election results will be finalized on March 7, 2014, and a new Commissioner could be sworn in as soon as the following Monday and serve until Dec. 31, 2016, when the remainder of the term expires.
