March 24 is the deadline to enter or sponsor a team in the Great Plains Literacy Council’s 2014 “GRATE” Altus Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 29. To be a part of this “Grate” event scheduled at the WOSC Band Room at 1:00 pm, just recruit two or three friends and co-workers from your company, organization, club or neighborhood and register the team at the Altus Public Library, 421 N. Hudson, before 6 pm on Monday. It will cost $100 for a team. As soon as the entry form is completed, the study guidelines and rules are available
This event will give prizes to the top two spelling teams and the best team name. For those who want to have costumes, there will be special prizes for that category. There is a “traveling award” for the top placing team from the base.
“It’s always been a fun, competitive event with lots of learning,” said David Braddock, Altus Insurance Agent and attorney. Having served as the master of ceremonies at the annual event for many years, he has volunteered again to help emcee the event to keep it running smoothly. “The team members can work together to determine the spelling. If for some reason a team gets a difficult word, they can purchase a mulligan to pass to another word. The team also has an opportunity to purchase three mulligans for $25, payable with the team registration. At the spelling bee, three mulligans will cost $35.”
Door prizes and refreshments will be available throughout the contest. Everyone who comes to the spelling bee will be eligible for door prizes. Winners must be present when announced.
