Washington Elementary School was recognized at the Monday Altus School Board meeting as being a Great Expectations Model School for the 2013-14 school year. Principal Renee Long, along with several Washington Elementary School teachers, were on hand for the recognition and to talk about the program. Long said that they started this process nine years ago, and this is the third year in a row that Washington has received this recognition. “It involves specific good teaching practices, training and dedication. Superintendent Roger Hill stated, “We appreciate the work that you and your staff have accomplished.”
Also during the Monday’s meeting, attorney Chuck Wade advised the Board in executive session about a court of appeals decision involving former Altus Schools’ students that were involved in an accident. After the executive session, Wade explained that the four years ago there was automobile accident in Greer County involving a drivers education instructor and three students. One of the students waited filed a lawsuit after the statute of limitations, and then just the driver of the vehicle under a tort claim as an employee of the schools. Wade said that the school’s former insurance carrier is picking up the expenses involved in the matter.
In another item, it was decided to amend a policy involving the school’s grading system for kindergarten students. They will now be incorporating kindergarten students in the A,B,C.D,F grading system.
Under retirements and resignations, there was one non-certified retirement, Susie Young as the Superintendent’s secretary, effective June 31, 2o14. Representative from both companies that submitted bids were on hand, and spoke to the board. It was noted that one of the bids was received late, and that more time needed to be taken to look over the two, so the matter was tabled, and a special meeting would be held later in the month to decided on the matter.
