Altus Police Department responded to a report of gun shots being fired early Monday morning, shortly after midnight, in the 500 block of North Hightower, reported Altus Cheif of Police Tim Murphy.
When officers arrived a short time later, a witness identified the suspect as the person who had shot the gun. The officers confronted the man in the 300 block of North Hightower where he fired one round at an officer.
“Two Altus police officers returned fire, striking the suspect once in the abdomen,” Chief Murphy said. “He was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital and later flown to OU medical center in OKC.”
The subjects condition is not known at this time.
The two Altus police officers were not injured and have been placed on paid administrative leave.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the shooting.
