EDWARDSVILLE — A Collinsville woman is in the Madison County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail after she was charged with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly shooting a friend in the head with a handgun.

Katelyn R. Stapleton, 26, was accused by a grand jury of acting in a reckless manner, “likely to cause death or great bodily harm, in that she discharged a firearm of Andrew M. Birch … causing the death of (the victim).”

First Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Vucich said interviews with witnesses confirmed that the shooting death was an accident.

She said the case was not charged by information by her office but was presented to the grand jury to make the decision.

The grand jury indicted Stapleton on May 15. The shooting occurred on Feb. 23. The case was being investigated in the intervening weeks, Vucich said.

“It was just an accident. All the law requires is that she acted in a reckless manner,” Vuicich said.

Stapleton has no prior criminal convictions. Birch died at his home just five days short of his 24th birthday. There were three other people in the home at the time of the shooting, police said.
