JERSEYVILLE — A Bethalto woman died Sunday night due to injuries from a motorcycle crash north of Pere Marquette State Park’s entrance, Jersey County Coroner Larry Alexander said Tuesday morning.
The single vehicle crash occurred at 8:01 p.m. Sunday, June 8, according to an Illinois State Police District 18 initial crash report. Alexander identified the woman as Barbara S. Steckel, 43, who he pronounced dead at the scene at 8:59 p.m.. he said.
Steckel was a passenger on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by Peter Lavite, 47, of Wood River, who survived. Lavite was airlifted by ARCH Air Medical Services to a St. Louis hospital where he remains, Alexander told The Telegraph.
The crash occurred on Illinois Route 100, also known as the Great River Road, 1.5 miles north of Pere Marquette State Park’s entrance. According to the crash report, Lavite was traveling southbound on Illinois Route 100 and when he drove to the right lost control of the vehicle in gravel.
The bike went under the guardrail, struck a post and both occupants were ejected. The motorcycle and the passenger came to rest on the rock shoulder, with the vehicle under the guardrail. The driver came to rest on the roadway. An ISP investigation is underway and investigators will conduct crash reconstruction.
The motorcycle was registered to John Lavite of Glen Carbon, the crash report stated.
ISP, the Jersey County Sheriff’s Department and QEM Fire Protection District all responded to the scene.
