A new board member was appointed to the Altus School Board, and a list of temporary new hires and substitutes were approved during the Altus Public School District Board of Education special meeting held Monday. Several school policies were also amended.

New Board member Debbie Nobles was appointed to fill position #3, effective Aug. 15, after a discussion in executive session took place. Nobles will be required to file in December for the next election if she wishes to remain on the Board, Dr. John Thomas explained. Nobles retired in May as Principal at Will Rogers Elementary and had previously served the district as a Title I Reading Teacher.

Position #3 became vacant when previous Board member Nate Covington purchased and moved to a home outside of the school district, making him no longer eligible to serve on the board. Covington resigned from the position in June.

The Board approved to amend three school policies, due to a change in state legislation, including Policy 500.010 - Records Investigation, 600.001 - Holidays and Days on Call for Twelve Month Employees, and Policy 700.120 - Altus School District Open Transfer Policy. The Board also approved to rescind Policy 700.032 - Selection of Junior High Honor Graduates.

The Board approved resignation of certified personnel Tony Buchanan - Social Studies Teacher at Altus Junior High, effective July 22, and Brooke Byrd - Elementary Teacher at Roosevelt Elementary, July 17. They also approve the reassignment of non-certified personnel Kim Butcher from 8-hr Cafeteria Manager at Washington Elementary to a 7-hr Cook at Washington, effective Aug. 7.

The Board approved new hires to a temporary contract including certified personnel Jeremy Atteberry - Physical Education Teacher, Vanessa Bowers - Title I Reading at AJH, Sue Craven - Kindergarten Teacher at Sunset, Aug. 7 to Dec. 12, 2013, Amanda Hayes - English at Bulldog Academy, Pamela Powell - Elementary Teacher at Washington, Debbie Rubi Elementary Teacher at Roosevelt, and approved Support personnel Loretta Cain - Teacher’s Aide at Rivers, Ruth Hernandez - Cafeteria Manager at Washington, Angie Orth - Teacher’s Aide at Roosevelt, Jeffrey Smith Sp. Education Aide at Altus High School. All new hires are effective Aug. 7.

The Board approved substitutes for the 2013-2014 school year including: Cecilia Abila, Leslie Bacon, TeresaBarnes, Melissa Benibamonde, Jennifer Bledsoe, Sylvester Bryant, Dennis E. Cardell, Jr., Karol Clayton, Michael Conner, Jenneane Cunningham, Wanda Cupp, Noreen Davis, Jack Diltz, Lavern Earls, Deborah Eckhart, Kelli George, Teresa Guyette, Crystal Hammack,Tiphanie Hamon, Melita Hawkey,Gregory Hawn, Jeramie Heldermon,Barbara Higginbotham, Koelle Hunter, Robert Jameson,Ashley Johnson, Dana Juarez, Regina Juarez, Eric Marshall,Jody Mattson, Bernadette McDowell, Carol McElroy, Darla McKenzie, Kelli McQuiggan,Emily Motley, Wendy Norris, Nikki Pedersen, Kathi Price, Victoria Russell,Willie Sims,Simon Soliz,Caitlyn Southall, Alison Templer, Lydia Torres, Heather Vanderzel, and MelindaTindall.

The Board approved time sheets, and volunteers for the Athletic Department including Randy Green, Sedric Jones, Harry Nolen, Chad Talley.
