Pre-Season Wheat Meeting – Both Harmon and Jackson County Extension Offices are offering a joint pre-season wheat meeting on Aug. 8. The Harmon County meeting will begin at 11 a.m. and go to 1 p.m. at the Gould Community Building, located directly east of Stockman’s Bank. The Jackson County meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude by 8 p.m. at the Jackson County Extension Office located on the north side of the WOSC campus. Topics covered will include variety and variety trial results discussion, herbicide, fertility, and seed treatment options, stocker cattle feeding strategies in conjunction with wheat pasture, and projected wheat budgets for the 2013/2014 production year. Free meals will be sponsored at each meeting. Pre-registration is requested, but no required by Wednesday, Aug. 7, 12 noon at either the Harmon County Extension Office, 580-688-3584, or the Jackson County Extension office, 580-482-0823.
Cattle Trails Wheat and Stocker Conference - This year’s Cattle Trails Stocker Conference is scheduled for Aug. 13, at the Great Plains Coliseum in Lawton Oklahoma, starting at 8 a.m. and concluding by 2 p.m. Speakers and topics will include Stan Bevers, Texas Agri-Life Agriculture Economist, looking at Expectations for the Wheat and Cattle Market; Ted McCollum, Texas Agri-Life Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, discussing management of cattle herds until wheat is ready for grazing; Gerald Horn, OSU Beef Cattle Researcher, giving an update from the Marshall Stocker Cattle Program; Bart Fischer, Congressman Lucas’s Office, presenting a congressional update; and David Worrall, Wheat Breeder and Product Manager, AgriPro/Syngenta Crop Science, discussing Wheat Breeding Research, “What we have Learned and Where we are Going”. This should be a great conference this year. Registration cost is $25 and forms can be picked up at any Southwest District County OSU Extension Office.
Both of these meetings should be informative and offer practical production input for area farmers and ranchers.
