Last week’s cold snap certainly let us know that Fall is well underway and Winter is just around the corner. Blowing in with the cold snap were a couple of Bald Eagles. One mature (white head and tail feathers) was spotted Thursday Oct. 24. That bird was observed flying over the Lugert townsite (southeast corner of Lake Altus-Lugert) and over the Quartz Mountain Golf Course. One Friday, an immature Bald Eagle (no white feathers) was observed flying low over the beach stretching from the covered fishing dock to the base of Twin Peaks.

This is a bit early for Bald Eagles to be arriving and staying for the winter. Often when they arrive this early, they ride in on a cold front and out on the next warm front. Usually Bald eagles arriving for the winter are spotted right around Thanksgiving. Though one year they didn’t arrive until Christmas.
Bald Eagles winter at Lake Altus-Lugert not to get away from the cold or snow. They will stay where the lakes and rivers are not freezing over. If Nebraska is having a mild winter more eagles will stay there fishing in open (unfrozen) water. If Oklahoma and points north freeze over, the Bald Eagles will fly further south.
Thursday, Oct. 31 is the last day of 2013 that the Eagle’s Roost ATV Area will be open to ATVs. It will reopen to ATVs April 1, for the five months in between it is open for hiking, beach strolling, nature photography-non motorized recreational activities. The campgrounds and restrooms are all winterized and locked down. Also being winterized at this time will be the comfort stations (bathrooms) along the river. The comfort stations in Scissortail and Live Oak Campgrounds remain open through the winter.
Quartz Mountain Grocery Store will be closing for the winter Oct. 31. They will reopen March 1. The Main Park (south side of the lake) does not shut down, if you wish to come camping in November or December, come on out. The crowds of people are greatly thinned out and the herds of deer will be greatly expanded.
