Susanne Rooker, LRC Director said, “To quote Edgar Allan Poe, “Poetry is the rhythmical creation of beauty in words.” The LRC is focusing on poetry, particularly original poetry in order for students and the community to show their creativity and express their thoughts into words. This also serves as a way to celebrate the poets who inspire us and encourage reading.
Furthermore, as Walt Whitman said, “To have great poets there must be great audiences too.” It is my hope that the Poetry Slam will make people feel welcome at the Learning Resources Center and provide a since of community within Western Oklahoma State College, Altus and its surrounding areas. The services of the LRC are available to everyone within the community, not just Western students, faculty and staff and I want this to be a way for everyone to be made aware of that.”
