Southwest Technology Center Robot Team #3802, “The Longshots” extend their winning streak and qualified for FIRST Robotic Super Regional Championship being held Feb. 26 – March 1 in San Antonio, Texas. This is a national level competition being hosted by the Henry B. Gonzalez Center and will feature 72 teams from the Southern States. “Our team qualified for the invitation by being on the winning Alliance team during the playoffs.” Stated Brian Chaney, Electronics Instructor and team mentor. 32 teams battled for the seven invitations to compete in San Antonio this past Saturday at the State Championship held in Weatherford.
FIRST Tech Challenge is a robotics competition for high school students based on a sports model. Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building and programming their robots to compete as alliances against other teams. Teams advance from local qualifying tournaments to state championship tournaments, before advancing to the super regional competition (National) held in San Antonio. If successful at the super regional compeition, it’s off to the World Championship Tournament, held in St. Louis, Mo. later this year.
In this competition the teams played seven qualifying matches during the first phase of the tournament. Each team is ranked by the points awarded during each match. At the end of the first phase, the top four teams beginning with the number one team, began selecting other teams from the field. The Longshots were seeded ninth after the qualifying rounds. Organized Chaos, the number one seed, selected the LightSabers and the Longshots as their alliance partners. The three teams swept the semi and finals with four straight victories securing their places in the National Competition.
“My proudest moment was when our team won the ‘Promotion Award’. This is awarded to the team submitting the top 60-second video which best promotes the FIRST Tech’s mission.” Explained Brian Chaney.
