Altus —- With spring storm season just weeks away, local emergency managers are encouraging area residents to prepare, during Emergency Management Week in Oklahoma.
Emergency managers from across Oklahoma are slated to be at the State Capitol February 26 as part of the week that focuses on planning, response, recovery, and mitigation, the four components of emergency management.
“It all starts with a plan,” said Wayne Cain, Jackson County emergency management director.
Based on the plan, Cain suggests building a 72-hour kit to support the plan. That kit should include water, food, medication, and any other needs the individual would need for their family and pets.
“Communications is also important,” said Lloyd Colston, City of Altus emergency manager. “Since many residents no longer have a landline phone, it is very important to have three ways to keep that cell phone powered.”
Using the Alert Altus process, area residents are advised by text and email of severe weather alerts and can receive a phone call regarding other emergent needs, ex. missing child, utility disruptions, etc.
Colston also encourages getting an amateur radio license and using “ham radio” to talk to one another. The Altus Skywarn Assocation, Altus Area Amateur Radio Club, and Altus Emergency Management Agency are sponsoring a Technician level class.
