During the regular meeting of the Altus School Board on Monday, Superintendent of Schools Roger Hill addressed the current number of students enrolled as it pertains to staffing needs.
Hill said that although enrollment numbers fluctuate throughout the year, current pre-enrollment numbers for all the schools combined is almost 800 less than than enrollment numbers in September 2013.
Current pre-enrollment is 3,509 students, with a possible additional 50 students from Head Start when school starts. At the end of the recent school year, there were 3,615 students. In September, enrollment was at 3,793.
Hill said that they definitely have to look at staffing with lower enrollment numbers, and with certain state and federal funding restrictions, “staffing situations will be looked at.”
Hill explained that after the year end’s retirements and resignations, there were 12 less certified personnel, and not all of those will be replaced. “There will be some reassignments, and some larger class sizes.”
Hill added, “We’ll just have to do more with less. That’s just the nature of what we’re dealing with right now.”
Pre-enrollment numbers for the 2014-15 school year are: Rivers Elementary, 343; Roosevelt Elementary, 271; Sunset Elementary, 464; Washington Elementary, 288; Will Rogers Elementary, 222; Altus Intermediate School, 510; Altus Junior High, 511; and Altus High School, 900, for a total of 3,509 students.
