The 1st Annual Michael Carter Spaghetti Feed and Silent Auction is to be held on Saturday, July 26 from 4-8 p.m. at the Altus Community Center to raise funds for the Michael Carter Memorial Scholarship. Their will be a variety of items up for auction that have been generously donated from businesses in the Altus area, as well as pre-season Dallas Cowboys tickets. All proceeds will go toward the the scholarship fund for graduating Altus High School seniors. Tickets are $10 at the door for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 5-12, and FREE for ages 4 and under.

The benefit is being held in honor of Michael Carter who passed away in April 2013, at the age of 22. Carter graduated from Altus High school in 2009 and attended Western Oklahoma State College. He was a bartender at Applebee’s in Altus before he worked as a waiter at the The Old Plantation Restaurant in Medicine Park, a career which allowed him to interact with many people and enjoy the stories many of them shared.

Michael’s mom, Cynthia Carter of Altus, said that she decided to plan the event and do something for the community as a great way to remember her son.

“I was looking for a way to help me get through my grieving process and thought what better way to remember Micheal through kindness,” Cynthia said. “Everybody remembers how kind he was. He was always there for his friends. He had great school spirit when he was here. I just wanted to honor him and do something for other kids in Altus and give back to the community because, all of his friends will tell you, he was always there for you all the time.”

Carter said that starting the Michael Carter Memorial Scholarship allows her to help others and turn something negative into something positive. The Carter family hopes to raise enough money to disburse the scholarship to a couple of students in the upcoming graduating class.

The Michael Carter Memorial Scholarship Fund is set up through First State Bank of Altus for anyone interested in donating. Businesses interested in donating auction items can contact Cynthia Carter at (580) 480-2635, or email carter70@cableone.net.
