A 2015 Kenworth tractor trailer, coming from the oilfields, overturned west of Granite Thursday at approximately 6:30 p.m. The driver was reported to be in critical condition.
According to reports, Dennis Dement, 60, of Wichita Falls, Texas, was driving the tractor trailer on State Highway 9, five miles west of Granite in Greer County, near CR 1970. He was said to have turned off the road right, and then impacted the delineator, continued east, then impacted a concrete culvert, and them came back onto the road. Dement over corrected and the tractor rolled one full time coming to rest off the road to the right. The trailer rolled 3/4 times, coming to rest off the road to the right.
The driver was pinned for about 30 minutes before being extracted by the Greer County Fire Department. Dement was then air evaced to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City in critical condition with head and trunk internal injuries.
The Altus Fire Department Hazmat team was also called to the scene. One Altus fire fighter/hazmat technician was sent to JCMH for a related injury. State Hwy 9 at the US 283 junction was closed for over seven hours.
OHP states the cause of the accident to be an improper act/movement/improper use of lane.
Seat belts were equipped, but use was unknown, and airbags were equipped but did not deploy.
The accident was investigated by Trooper Duncan Smith, and was assisted by Lieutenant Steven Pothorst, Troopers Jeff Fielder, Shawn Laughlin, Chris Sherman, Ryan Hayes, Craig Dill, Kyle Show, Greer County Sheriff’s Department, Greer County Fire Department, Altus Fire Department Hazmat, Granite Police Department, Greer County EMS, and Air Evac.
