A head-on crash between a tractor trailer and a pickup truck on Illinois Route 159 near Dorsey Tuesday resulted in the driver of the pickup needing to be cut out of the vehicle.
The Dorsey Fire Department responded to the call on Route 159 between Seiler and Renken roads near Dorsey at around 10 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Scott Aljets. Mutual aid was provided by the Prairietown and Holiday Shores fire departments. Illinois State Police also was on the scene.
Aljets said the accident occurred when the front corners of the northbound truck and the southbound trailer collided. The driver of the truck became trapped in the vehicle as a result of the collision, necessitating the use of the department’s extrication equipment. Aljets said the driver was conscious and alert throughout the 15-to-20-minute process. He said the department delayed extricating the driver until a helicopter arrived.
“A lot of times it’s better not to get the person out of the vehicle too soon,” Aljets said.
The driver was taken to a St. Louis hospital by an Area Rescue Consortium of Hospitals (ARCH) helicopter, and his condition is unknown. The driver of the tractor trailer refused treatment at the scene.
