The Altus Junior 8th grade girls basketball team used a big second quarter to pull away from the
Lawton Central Lady Cougars and then held on late for a 24-21 victory.
Both teams sunk into 2-3 zones and basically dared each other to win the game from the outside.
The first quarter ended with the teams locked up at 5. At the start of the second quarter the Lady Dawgs made a defensive switch to shutdown the outside shooter from Central and it paid off as the Lady Dawgs outscored Central 11-5 in the quarter to take a 16-8 lead into the half.
“Kady Worth pretty much shut down their best shooter the rest of the game,” said Coach Robert Garrison.
Altus pushed the lead to 20-8 before Central scored the last seven points of the quarter. Altus went into the final quarter up 20-15.
In the final quarter Altus slowed down the pace a little and built a 24-15 lead with less than two minutes left.
Both teams put in their benches and Central was able to hit two 3-pointers in the final minute to cut the score to 24-21 as the buzzer sounded.
Worth lead Altus with 10 points while Nia Hill added 9.
The victory was the third in a row for the Lady Dawgs, with all those wins coming against Lawton schools.
Altus, now 9-6 on the season will enter the Cache Tournament on Wednesday where they play tournament favorite Cache in the opening round. Altus will finish their season on Feb. 10 when they travel to Clinton.
