The Altus girls track and field team received strong performances en route to a second-place finish in the Altus Invitational on a windy Saturday at Hightower Memorial Stadium.
Lawton Eisenhower took the team title with 190 points, and Altus scored 154. Duncan (111), Lawton High (85) and Weatherford (49) rounded out the top five in the 14-team field.
Duncan won the boys division with 119 points, and Lawton High was second with 103. Altus was sixth with 56 points.
The Lady Bulldogs’ Ashely Hughes won the 300-meter hurdles in 47.48 seconds, the second-fastest time statewide in Class 5A this season.
Julia Pack had a big day in the distance races. She won the 3200 in 13 minutes, 44.72 seconds, she was second in the 800 in 2 minutes, 40.05 seconds and she was second in the 1600 in 6:16.35.
“This was a tough running day for all the athletes, but we posted some of our best times of the year,” Altus girls head coach Robert Garrison said.
Kiandra Knight was second in the 200 in 25.67, the fastest time in 5A this year. Also finishing second were Zetta McCaskill in the 400 (61.92), Mariah Watson in the long jump (15 feet, 5 inches) and Hughes in the 100 hurdles (15.55).
Sicily Gonzalez placed third in the 3200 (15:31.32), Britney Drewry placed third in the pole vault (7-6), and Jimmie Dollins took third in the 100 hurdles (15.83).
“In the 100 hurdles, Hughes and Dollins posted the second- and third-fastest times in Class 5A this year, and Knight’s 200 time was outstanding,” Garrison said.
The 400 relay team of Shauna McGill, Watson, Tyara Jones and Knight took third (52.62), as did the 800 relay team of
McCaskill, Hughes, Knight and Jones (1:49.75). The 1600 relay team of McCaskill, Hughes, Grace Hernke and Bree Barker took third (4:21.51), and the 3200 relay team of Pack, Hernke, Barker and Lexi Herron finished third (11:06.84).
Lauren Bledsoe was fifth in the 3200, Cassidy Pearl and Dayna Brown shared fifth in the pole vault, and Dollins was sixth in the 300 hurdles.
The Altus boys received victories from Malik Knight in the high jump (5-10) and Ben McBrayer in the 300 hurdles (42.32). Knight was third in the long jump (19-11).
The Bulldogs’ 3200 relay team of Guiovanni Esmerado, Allen Ortiz, Cameron Loving and Gant Duncan was third in 9:02.23.
Other boys team totals were Lawton MacArthur with 95, Frederick 82, Weatherford 69, Lawton Eisenhower 51, Hollis 47, Tipton 7 and Elk City 4.
The Altus teams will compete Thursday at Duncan, then will turn their attention to regionals scheduled for May 10.
“We’ve run a very tough, challenging schedule, and we are now seeing the results we needed to see,” Garrison said of the Lady Bulldogs. “Now we just have to stay healthy and focus on our upcoming task.”
