Altusians Jarmal Dorsey and Alex Drake teamed up this past weekend for first place in the 2014 version of the Altus Summer Tennis Tournament. The pair went undefeated in a four team round robin pool ahead of the second place team of Kade Redden of Altus and Justin Bailey of Lawton.
Ladies singles was dominated by Jackson County ladies. First place honors went to Brittany Mungaven, second to Deanna Keegan and third place was secured by Georgetta Fowler of Headrick. AHS freshmen-to-be Meghan Davis took 2nd place honors in the girls 14 singles behind Lawton’s Ashlyn Claxton. Taylor Busby and Shalee Maahs were Altus’ representatives in the girls 16/18 singles. Busby edged Maahs 8-6 in the 3rd place match of the eight team field on Friday night.
Saturday, the two teamed up to win the championship in the combined eight team youth and ladies doubles field. They outpointed the Anadarko duo of Lexi Toles and Tayra Ward 8-4 in the finals. In the same ladies bracket, Brittany Mungaven and Deanna Keegan combined for the consolation championship.
Play concluded Saturday night as 12 teams participated in the mixed doubles tournament bracket. The mother and son team of Annie and Alex Drake tried to duplicate last years 1st place finish but were denied by Brooke Lasseter and Jansen Rouillard of Wichita Falls in the finals. In the fifth place match, current Altus varsity players Taylor Busby and Kade Redden downed AHS alum’s Brittany Mungaven (07) and Justin Jones (08).
Thirty-eight players participated in this weekends event. Thirteen were from Jackson County (12 Altus and 1 from Headrick), ten hailed from Lawton, nine from Wellington, four from Anadarko and two were from Wichita Falls.
