The Lady Bulldogs softball team went to El Reno over the weekend and faced four opponents and came away with two wins and two losses.
In the opening game, the girls managed just one hit by Taylor Warrington against Noble. The Lady Bulldogs beat Noble the week but lost in the tournament to them 12-1. Instead of letting a game like that one get their heads down, the girls needed a short memory. They jumped out front of Bishop McGuiness with three runs in the first inning after Tessa Duncan lead the game on base with a walk. They added a much needed insurance run in the third. Bishop McGuiness tallied 3 runs in their half of the third. However, the Bulldogs were able to hold on to the 4-3 victory. Warrington and Alexis Williams added RBI singles for the Lady Bulldogs.
The softballers turned around Saturday and again stumbled out of the blocks losing the first game to Western Heights 4-5. Ashlee Baker and Somer Sturdevant both were 2 for 2 at the plate.
“It wasn’t until the final game against Enid that the we played good softball,” said coach Gary Freeman. “We had made too many mistakes and left too many runners on. The 65 minute time limit didn’t help us any either.”
Bailey Dickson broke up a 0-0 tie in the 4th inning with one of her three hits and eventually scored the first run of the game. Dickson went on to score again in the 5th after her third single drove in a run. For the game, Dickson was 3 for 3, scored twice, and added a RBI.
The Lady Bulldogs beat Enid 5-1. Enid managed just two hits off pitcher Tessa Duncan.
Freeman added, “The seniors are a solid nucleus for us. They are the core of the team. Even though we are even at 3-3 in district and 5-5 overall, we are getting better and better. We have made improvements along the way showing the hard work these girls have put in out in this heat. Some teams on our schedule are not as highly regarded as others. It’s these games that we simply can’t have let downs. We have to bring our best every day, every game, every inning, every at bat. We have high expectations for this group.”
The softball squad travels to Hobart on Friday.
