The Altus Junior High 8th grade Dawgs rolled up all the offense it needed to win the game. However, turnovers and penalties were too much to overcome and the Dawgs dropped an 14-8 contest to Lawton Eisenhower in overtime.
Altus forced Ike into a punt on their first series and the Dawgs’ offense started moving down the field. The drive ended with a fumble. Ike capitalized on the turnover and scored to plays later, then tacked on the conversion. Ike led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.
On their next possession, the Dawgs offense again rolled forward and with 4:25 left in the half, fullback Garrett Pride went up the middle for a 5 yard score. Pride worked the conversion in the end zone and the game was tied. As time wound down in the first half, AJH again was on the move. When a would be touchdown pass sailed a little too long for outstretched hands, the halftime score was knotted at 8-8.
The score remained tied going into the fourth even thought Altus dominated the third quarter. Again, an error, this time in the form of a holding penalty, stopped a nice drive at the Ike 15 yard line.
Altus again with two drives going deep into Ike territory, the offense stumbled with two fumbles effectively stopping both drives. Fortunately, the defense held Ike in check and time expired with the score still even 8-8.
In the overtime, Altus took the ball first and put the ball on the ground again and Ike recovered. Ike then took their shot at the endzone and scored on their first play to win the game 14-6.
The Altus offense was led by Pride who had 131 yards rushing on 20 carries. Trey Pierce had 36 yards on 3 carries while Nehemiah McCaskill had 33 yards on 5 carries. The Altus defense was led by Joel Arroyo, Dawson Loving, Pride, Koby Bates, and Justin Atchley. Next action for the Dawgs will be next Tuesday when they host Elk City.
