Federal order on transgender restroom usage alarming

State Rep. Charles Ortega

Editor’s note: State House District 52 hopeful Dr. John N. Thomas was provided an opportunity to respond.

OKLAHOMA CITY – State Rep. and Majority Leader of the Oklahoma House of Representatives Charles Ortega (R-Altus) issued the following statement in response to the Obama Administration’s directive to public schools – with the threat of loss of federal funding – to allow children to use the restroom of the gender with which they identify:

“The ‘guidance’ issued to state-run public schools by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice in the matter of transgender restroom usage is alarming in that it threatens the withholding of federal funds if schools do not comply. Local school boards are in the best position to address the needs and protection of all students in the schools which they oversee. To try to usurp this authority at the federal level is an unjust overreach. I am working with leadership in the Oklahoma House and Senate to protect our constitutionally guaranteed states’ rights.”
