Leslie A.J. Veach, 83, of Mangum, passed away Friday, October 27, 2006, at Mangum Community Hospital in Mangum.

Leslie was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Wynnewood to Basil and Bonnie (Smith) Veach. He moved to Mangum in the early 1920s and left only briefly when he joined the United States Army in 1940, He served for seven years. On Oct. 15, 1942, he married Betty Jo Barrett and they were happily married for 64 years until his passing. Leslie was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church where he served faithfully for many years. After his service in the Army, Leslie became a cable system operator and later owned a locksmith business in Mangum and was known for his work ethic. Leslie was known by many as the man that would work till he couldn't work any more. Leslie loved to spend his free time bowling and doing woodwork, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Leslie was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Betty Faye; seven brothers and two sisters.

Leslie is survived by his wife of the home; his son, Lt. Col. Wayne Veach and wife Sheryl of Norman; his daughter, Janie Landers and husband Dale of Altus; a brother, Billy Veach and his wife Barbara of Vacaville, Calif.; five grandchildren, Virginia Rhodes and husband Haywood of Durham, N.C., Michael Veach and wife Heather of Norman, Shandyll Landers of Altus, Jamie Lynn Landers of Altus, Justin Landers and wife Jamie of Altus; four great-grandchildren, Katelyn Randolph of Altus, Maggie Landers of Altus, Jesse Stephens of Altus and Ty Stephens of Altus, and many other family members and friends.

The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at Greer Funeral Home. Funeral services for Leslie A.J. Veach will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 30, 2006, at Trinity Baptist Church in Mangum with the Rev. James Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home in Mangum.
