A bald eagle has been seen all week soaring on the thermals above Twin Peaks and Hicks Mountain. The recent cold snap should have others eagles winging their way south to Quartz Mountain.

The first eagle watch will be held 9 a.m., Saturday Jan. 2 at Quartz Mountain’s Group Camp (across the street from Quartz Mountain Grocery Store). Eagle Watches take just about two hours and start with a PowerPoint presentation all about bald eagles-what they eat, how big they are and where and when to find them. After the presentation, folks load up into their personal vehicles and the naturalist leads a caravan around Lake Altus-Lugert in search of eagles.

Reservations are not necessary. If you are interested in attending, just dress warm and show up a little before 9 a.m. If you have a large group of scouts, 4-Hers, or any other group, you may want to set up an alternate date just for your group by calling (580) 563-2238 and ask for Sue.

Maybe you don’t want to wait until the New Year to see a bald eagle. Or maybe you want to travel alone so you can take photos of the bald eagles. If so, you can stop by either the park office or the Nature Center and ask for an eagle wwatching tip sheet. This will provide some helpful hints on where the bald eagles might be found at various times of the day.

If you out driving around Lake Altus-Lugert and see more than one eagle, you might want to stop in and let them know. Bald eagles are welcome winter visitors to Quartz Mountain and the park workers love to know how many are being spotted and where.
