ELK CITY – It didn’t look good for the Altus High Bulldogs in the waning moments of their season opener against the Elk City Elks on Tuesday night.
Will Davis had just hit a three-point shot with five seconds left to put the Elks ahead with 63-62. But senior guard Derrick Bull came through with a clutch three-point bucket of his own to lift the Bulldogs to a 65-63 victory over Elk City.
After Davis’ shot, the Bulldogs didn’t get a time-out called there were two seconds. Actually the clock ran out but the officials ordered two seconds be put back on the clock.
The inbounds pass was made by Erick Sanders to Mylan Ward who touched passed it to Bull. Bull then quickly put up the three-pointer that went through the net giving the Bulldogs the improbable victory.
“We haven’t practiced that (the play), AHS coach Rick Bull said. “We just drew it up but, we’re going to practice it now. You can run that 50 times with no defense and not make it.”
The Bulldogs had trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half but rallied to cut the deficit to two at 34-32 by halftime.
“It’s a good win for us,” Bull said. “To come back like that with a young ball club is big. And Elk City they have a pretty good team.”
Bull, who was a preseason Class 5A all-state selection, hit six three point shots on the night and finished with 26 points. Mylan Ward had 14 points and Erick Sanders 11 points. Nolan Cox finished with nine points and Davian Hill five points.
