It doesn’t get any easier for the Altus High Bulldogs.
Altus will travel to Lawton on Thursday night for a meeting with the powerful Lawton High Wolverines. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Cameron University Stadium.
LHS is ranked fifth in Class 6A, is 2-0 on the season with victories over cross town rivals Lawton Eisenhower (50-7) and Lawton MacArthur (28-19).
Altus comes into the game at 0-2 following a 42-3 loss to Vernon, Texas, and a 41-6 set back to Eisenhower.
Altus High Head Coach did find some bright spots in the loss against Ike.
“We competed a lot harder in the first half, than we ever did against Vernon,” Stone said.
As far as Lawton High goes, the Bulldogs will face the best team they will see all season.
“I told our kids they are big, they are fast and they have players that are big and fast,” Stone said.
Offensively the Wolverines have three big weapons in running backs Ivan Thomas (6-1, 265, Jr.) and Dajuan Wojeciechowski (5-11, 171, Sr.) plus quarterback Dallas Sealy (6-1, 165, Jr.)
Wojeciechowski has been the big contributor for the Wolverines so far this season but Thomas is a hard runner and create create havoc for opposing defenses.
“He (Thomas) is a load and the quarterback can throw and can run like a deer,” Stone said.
LHS also has a big offensive line and Ryan Yost (6-5, 277, Sr.) and Jalin Barnett (6-3, 275, Soph.) are quality players.
Defensively the Wolverines line up in a 4-3. Defensive end Dominque Pifer (6-2, 220, Sr.) and middle linebacker Taylor Wattenbarger (6-1, 181, Jr.) are dominant players.
But despite being underdogs, Stone is not willing to throw in the towel. “We have some athletes on this team,” Stone said. “We have a chance to go and out there and play with them.”
Game notes: Stone cited Wavin Yada and defensive lineman Bobby Martinez for outstanding play. Yada caught a 70 yard touchdown and excelled as a free safety which allowed Diquon Woodhouse to return to his natural position at cornerback. Martinez came off a hamstring injury and caused problems for Ike.
The same five players that missed the Ike game because of injury will not play against Lawton High. They include receivers Kasen Warren and Demauri Randle plus receiver/defensive back Damien Ray, tackle Chase Garrison and Kyle Detrick.
A familiar name appears in the starting lineup for LHS. Kevin Bell who transferred from Altus this season will start at cornerback.
