Last year the 1-3-1 and the 1-3-1 zone trapping defense was very good to the Altus High Bulldogs. Last night was no different.

The Bulldogs used that defense to spark a 15-0 run and break a close game open. The Bulldogs went on to defeat the Elgin Owls 60-38.

The 1-3-1 worked well but pretty much every defense Altus used against Elgin worked well.

“We played good defense all night, the men worked well too,” AHS head coach Rick Bull said.

Altus trailed early in the third quarter 30-27 before the Bulldogs went on the 15-0 spree. Eric Sanders made a layup early in the fourth period and Altus led 42-30.

The Owls never recovered after that.

Derrick Bull scored 21 points to lead all scorers. Erick Sanders had 13 points.,

Altus scored only five points in the second quarter, Bull blamed that on a triangle and two defense employed by Elgin. “They got us out of sink which is going to happen some,” Bull said. “Woodward did it last year, Elgin did it in one of the games last year. They chase Derrick and they pick out another one. We put in something (to go against the triangle and two). We’re obviously not running it as well as we’re going to need to run and I anticipate we will see that by some other teams. If we get to executing that as well I think it can that (triangle and two) is not going to work.”

Altus, 2-1 on the season, will enter the Tulsa Bishop Kelley tournament on Thursday. They will play host Kelley at 8:30 p.m.

Notes: Rick Bull coached and son Derrick played with heavy hearts on Tuesday. A little more than hour prior to the game, Rick’s mother and Derrick’s grandmother died. She was 93. Rick wasn’t sure when the funeral will be but it probably will be Thursday or Friday.
