Unfortunately the Altus High Bulldogs and Lawton Eisenhower Eagles have a lot in common going into their game here on Friday night.

Both teams will try to rebound from lopsided losses in their season opener. Altus lost to Vernon 42-3 while the Eagles were defeated by cross town rival Lawton High 50-7.

The two teams get together at Hightower Memorial Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

AHS Head Coach Stone reflected on Vernon game.

“Surprised would be the word that really comes to mind,” Stone said. “What surprised me was how in one week’s time we went from a team went out there, competed and really dominated the scrimmage and took the will away from Elk City. And to letting another team do that same thing to us.”

Monday was long day for the players and coaches. They showed up at 9 a.m. There was a 90 minute meeting with the varsity while the freshman and junior varsity went out and practiced. “We aired some things out,” Stone said. “We let them know the film wasn’t going to be pleasant but we are going to sit there and watch it.”

“Three and a half hours later it was very apparent there was some finger pointing and things like that that was going on even during the game,” Stone said. “The signs as a head coach you never want to see especially from a team that you though had come together and got tight. When it was over with (the film) they all realized it wasn’t any one person. It was every single one of them.”

Eisenhower had some success early in the game against LHS. The Eagles scored on the first play on a long pass. They then got a turnover and had an opportunity to go up 14-0 but they could not convert.

The Eagles use two different quarterback Bentley Bross (6-2, 160, Soph.) the son of former OU player Eric Bross and Randy Green (5-11, 175, Jr.).

Bross is the better thrower of the two.

Their running game centers around Melique Antoine (6-0, 225, Jr.) a hard runner the Eagles flex triple option type scheme.

“This quarterback (Bross) doesn’t pitch on the triple option,” Stone said. “He throws it to a receiver. It’s almost like a little bubble screen. That’s going to be something different you don’t see that a whole bunch. At the same time it’s the triple option, you have the same responsibilities (on defense).

“They are a good football team. You look at their scrimmages against Norman North, Edmond Sante Fe, Westmoore and Mustang and they gave those four teams everything they wanted.”

Defensively the Eagles line up in an standard 4-3

As far as the Bulldogs are concerned it has been an interesting week of practice.

Stone said there is going to be a lot of competition this week for starting positions

“None of the positions are set. We told our kids we’re going to find out who’s tough this week.”

Bulldog notes: The injury bug as struck the Bulldog camp especially at wide receiver. Demaurie Randle is rehabbing a knee injury suffered in the Weatherford scrimmage and will be out for at least two more weeks. Kasen Warren has ligament damage in his ankle and is out for the Ike game. Damien Ray is not expected to play because of injury. Offensive tackle Chase Garrison is out six to eight weeks with a shoulder and elbow injury.

Stone cited punter/place kicker Michael Perez and freshman running back Taven Burdow for good play in the Vernon game. Perez had six punts for a 43 yard average and a 41 yard field goal. Burdow came into the game in the fourth quarter and ran five times for 83 yards and was the leading rusher.

Burdow will start at running back against Eisenhower. Wavin Yada will be moved to wide receiver.
